The author, Steven Rice, M.D. was a psychiatrist in Memphis, Tennessee. He had an interest in treating patients using both standard psychiatric practice and a Christian approach to illness. He had experience in an array of settings including office practice, inpatient psychiatry, teaching, and research. He also worked extensively with individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities at a state facility in North Mississippi. He was board certified in adult, geriatric, and adolescent psychiatry. He served in leadership positions with the Christian Medical Dental Association.
The purpose in writing this book was to encourage people with mental illness and their families and caregivers, and to help them realize that mental illness is not a life sentence. Furthermore, he wanted suffering people to realize that the experiences of mental illness may, in fact, work together for good.
